Idea sheet
Idea sheet for poses

Martin Schoeller
Martin schoeller was born March 12, 1968, mainly based in New York. He is best known for his 'hyper-detailed close ups' also most recognisable work are his portraits, shots with similar lighting, backdrops and tone. When researching him i came across photos he had taken of women body builders and this gave me the idea to do something similar.

Photoshoot 1 - Test
|
Before i conduct my photo shoots i wanted to do a test shoot for me to experiment when it comes to the model's skin tone. When looking at both men and women body builders i found that that their bodies where fairly tanned. With the images on the left i plan on first experimenting my own methods of darkening the skin and then so some research looking at tutorial videos. |
Skin Colour Change
Process
|
The process of turning the skin colour of the model's it was fairly difficult for a number of reasons. One challenge was not to over do it as then it changes the quality of the picture and create blotches of the faces. After I tried to experience on my own I then decided to go onto youtube to look for tutorials that could help me. |
Body- photoshoot
|
For the model i used a fairly built model. i had to make sure the camera and him where at the same level so that the composition of the image is similar to the head. When it comes to the poses i just had to show the model the drawings i had done for my idea sheet. |
Face - Test
Using a model with a similar skin tone to the body, took head shots so i could start to edit and see i how i would add the head to the body, i asked the models to angle themselves similarly to the pose the body was doing so that it would be easier for me to connect the necks. As you can see with the images below i was able to achieve my goal. When editing the final pieces i will have to be careful with the tone of skin to make sure that it matches.
Test for final pieces
photoshoot 1
When it came to the first photo shoot i darkened the model skin tone with foundation by using my own foundation colour and the models foundation colour so that i got her to be 2 tones darker, this will help it be easier for me to darken her skin tone on photoshop. I then went onto adding eyelashes and enhancing her eye brows then adding a bright pink lipstick. When it comes to costume, the model didn't need to swear something specific as the only part of the images i was going to used was her neck meaning from a shoulders up she need to be bare skinned. Looking at Martin Schoeller's work of the women body builders i decided to use one of the models hair for inspiration. I choose a white background similar to Martin Schoeller, when it comes to lighting i used a clamshell lighting making sure that the face wasn't over exposed. I also made sure to direct my model in terms of poses, i wanted the face to contrast with the body.
Experimentation with the bra
I decided to try and see how the image would look like with some sort of coverage so that the image conveys a women body builder, therefore making it look more similar to Martin Schoeller's work . To do this i got a bra from one of the women body builders and applied it on the same way i applied the girl heads to the body. Looking at the results i preferred the image without the bra based on the feedback i got from other students. |

With these photoshoots i made sure to follow the same steps as the first. The make-up on the model on the left was done differently to focusing on the eyes due to the pose i had planned for her to do whereas the model in the right the focus is her lips. I made sure that the models did the same poses as the body did so that when it came to positioning the head to the body it would be fairly easier, for example the creases and turning in the neck synced together. With these photoshoot i face the challenge of hair. When taking the initial photo's i hadn't made sure to not cut off the hair of the model's and so resulted in me trying to blend in the tips of their hair from other images so that it came in front of the body.
Photoshoot 4
Looking back at the images of the previous body i thought that even though the model was fairly built, i needed a model that had more definition. I contacted one of my friend that is a amateur body builder, he takes part in competitions around the uk and so was more suitable than the previous model. I used the same lighting and a white background, the composition of the shot was from the waist up but in some of the shots due to the poses he was doing where from the knees up. In terms of the poses, instructed him to make similar poses to my idea sheet also adding in some poses that he would do on a stage when performing for example that back shoots. In terms of editing i used the same skills as i had done for the previous shoots. For my outcome i wanted to use the same face throughout so that it could be a series of one model.
